Personal and Blog Goals for 2012

Personal Goals

  • Get accepted to the Tepper School of Business (Carnegie Mellon) and the Katz School of Business (University of Pittsburgh) and enroll in one of the programs in the Fall of 2012 (August)
  • Start creating detailed budgets and track all of my spending on a monthly basis. I started tracking my spending when I started my last blog and I had things very organized.  I got a little lazy and stopped tracking, so I want to start tracking my spending again.
  • Continue building a down payment fund for a new house.  I have been looking at houses recently and I need to boost my down payment fund to avoid Private Mortgage Insurance.  I would like my down payment fund to be between $30,000 and $40,000.
  • Get surgery on my elbow. I know this is a weird goal, but I have an issue with my elbow called snapping triceps syndrome.  It has been driving me crazy for years and it is time for me to get it fixed!

Blog Goals

  • My main goal for my blog right now is to increase traffic to my blog.  I know my blog is new, so it will be a challenge to grow my blog and get some good organic traffic from Google.
  • Convince my girlfriend to start writing for the blog.  She would be very good writing about nutrition, health & fitness, and a variety of other subjects.
  • Maintain an average between 2 and 3 posts per week.  With my last blog, I started to get burnt out because I was trying to write too many blog posts.  I don’t want that to happen again, so I am going to try and limit the number of posts.
  • Obtain an Alexa ranking under 200,000 by August 23, 2012.

  • I love creating goals! I haven’t set any real goals for the blog yet but I need to do that!

I’m trying to get my wife to write on the blog but she thinks she has nothing to say. LOL. That’s just not true. Everything we experience in life is something we can talk about…frustrations, successes, struggles, etc.

Good luck on the challenge and on the rest (more important) goals!

  • It would be great to get your gf to help you with your blog. It allows you to add a female perspective behind some of the posts and you guys may enjoy working on it together. Good luck with the surgery on your elbow!

    • I think she is almost convinced to start writing!

I actually scheduled the elbow surgery yesterday, so I’m looking forward to getting it fixed.

  • Great goals, best of luck trying to get into school, those are some great ones! Also, you will be surprised on how quickly your traffic grows!

Finally, I’ve been trying to get my wife to write for over 2 years and had no luck – so good luck with your GF!

  • Oh, good luck on getting into CMU and Pitt! Those are both really great programs!

It looks like we have a lot of the same blog goals…except I don’t have a gf that can write for me 🙂

I was reading about the tax credit you found for her…great job!

  • Best of luck with your b-school choices. I did really enjoy my time in business school, plus it enabled me to make a career transition. I’m mixed on the blog goals. Personally, it’s nice to have the goals and do whatever you can to meet them, but in another way many of the metrics to track success are out of your hands… And good luck with the surgery.

    • Yeah, that is one of the main reasons for b-school. I will be going part-time, but it will definitely open the door for other career fields.

      • I started out going part-time in order to keep some income flowing, but transitioned to full time for my last year. Extra benefit, I got to know basically the entire school both part-timers and full-timers. Great for the network. I also made extensive use of the career center, and they really did help quite a lot.

  • Funny.. I have never seen anyone list “Get Surgery” on their goal list 🙂

I couldn’t recommend enough the idea of writing with your significant other ..
My wife and I have been writing together on See Debt Run, and it has really been a great bonding experience.

    • haha yeah, it seems like an odd goal, but it’s been bothering me for the last 5 years and it is time to just get it fixed!

I’m really hoping my gf will start writing on the blog. I think it would be great for both of us if she does.

  • I’m trying to get my husband to write for our blog as well! He just can’t seem to find the time to sit down and write though.

What is your timeline on the mortgage downpayment? The more specific you are on the goals the more likely you are to accomplish them!

    • Good luck with getting your husband to write!

Well, I guess the timing is up in the air. There is nothing even remotely close to what I want available where I am looking, so it could be awhile before I find the right house.

  • Before I started my current blog, I had a savings blog that I was posting to at least twice a day. I quickly burned out and didn’t enjoy blogging anymore. After taking a six month break I’m now enjoying blogging again, but I think it’s smart not to over post at first. It’s amazing how much time and energy goes into blogging. Great list!

  • Food is where I don’t do well in my budget. I think for February my family and I went about 10% over the groceries budget. It was much higher for the eating out budget. It’s something we always struggle with.

Oh, and your Alexa ranking is looking pretty nice. At about 800k today, you will for sure meet your goal of under 200k in August!
